Znam Harry’ego, nie znam Anny – declension of names in Polish (A1)

Traveling to Poland John very quickly becomes Johnem, Johna, Johnie. Many students find those changes quite unusual but in Polish names – both native and foreign – are declined the same way as common nouns or adjectives. Do you know how to decline your name?

MALE NAMES

For male names end in consonant (or the vowel -o) we use the same declension patters as for common nouns.

Names end in -a follow the feminine declansion pattern:
Sasha: znam Sashę, nie ma Sashy, idę z Sashą, rozmawiam o Sashy

For names end in -i or -y we tend to use the adjective declension pattern:

Antoni: znam Antoniego, nie ma Antoniego, idę z Antonim, rozmawiam o Antonim
Harry: znam Harry’ego, nie ma Harry’ego, idę z Harrym, rozmawiam o Harrym
Ali: znam Alego, nie ma Alego, idę z Alim, rozmawiam o Alim

Names with endings unusual for Polish, tend to be left unchanged:
Joe: znam Joe, nie ma Joe, idę z Joe, rozmawiam o Joe
Radu: znam Radu, nie ma Radu, idę z Radu, rozmawiam o Radu

Note, the name Andrew, although it ends in a consonant, will not be declined because of the pronunciation (the last sound is similar to the Polish ‘u’). On the other hand the name Steve will be declined because the last sound we hear is a consonant.

FEMININE NAMES

Here the rule is very simple: if a name ends in -a then it is declined otherwise it stays unchanged:

Jessica: znam Jessicę, nie ma Jessici, idę z Jessicą, rozmawiam o Jessice
Andrea: znam Andreę, nie ma Andrei, idę z Andreą, rozmawiam o Andrei
Angela: znam Angelę, nie znam Angeli, idę z Angelą, rozmawiam o Angeli
but
Karen: znam Karen, nie ma Karen, idę z Karen, rozmawiam o Karen
Beatrice: znam Beatrice, nie ma Beatrice, idę z Beatrice, rozmawiam o Beatrice
