In general, asking questions in Polish is quite simple – questions are created by adding interrogative words (jak?, gdzie?, kiedy?, skąd? etc.) to affirmative sentences. However, questions about people and things might be a little bit tricky as the pronouns kto and co are also declined. Look at the patterns below:
Questions with the interrogative pronouns ‘kto’ and ‘co’
The case used in the answer needs to equal the form of the interrogative pronoun.
Co to jest? – What is it? (co = mianownik)
To jest książka. – This is a book. (book = mianownik)
Czego nie rozumiesz? – What do you not understand? (czego = dopełniacz)
Nie rozumiem polskiej gramatyki. – I don’t understand Polish grammar (polskiej gramatyki = dopełniacz)
Kogo nie lubisz? – Who do you not like? (kogo = dopełniacz)
Nie lubię tej kobiety. – I don’t like this woman (tej kobiety = dopełniacz)
Czemu się przyglądasz? – What are you looking at? (czemu = celownik)
Przyglądam się twojej sukience. Jest bardzo ładna. – I’m looking at your dress. It’s very pretty (twojej sukience = celownik)
Komu pomóc? – Who should I help? (komu = celownik)
Mnie! – Me! (mnie = celownik)
Co jemy dzisiaj na lunch ? – What are we eating for lunch today? (co = biernik)
Kupiłam pizzę. – I bought a pizza. (pizzę = biernik)
Kogo zaprosisz na imprezę? – Who will you invite to the party? (kogo? = biernik)
Zaproszę moją koleżankę. – I’ll invite my friend. (koleżankę = biernik)
Z czym chcesz kanapkę? – What would you like on your sandwich? (z czym = narzędnik)
Chcę kanapkę z szynką i serem. – I would like a sandwich with ham and cheese. (szynką i serem = narzędnik)
Z kim się spotykasz? – Who are you meeting with? (z kim = narzędnik)
Spotykam się z kolegą. – I’m meeting with my friend. (z kolegą = narzędnik)

O czym myślisz? – What are you thinking about? (o czym = miejscownik)
O mojej pracy. – About my work. (mojej pracy = miejscownik)
O kim myślisz? – Who are you thinking about? (o kim = miejscownik)
O mojej córce. – About my daughter. (córce = miejscownik)
Note that in English you use the forms who and what with each of those questions. It’s because English is not an inflected language and does not use cases. Check the previous post to see how the cases work in Polish.
